Promoting greater gender diversity and equality in STEM is not just about encouraging more young girls to take an interest in science and mathematics. Getting a chance to see women take the lead in STEM roles goes a long way to normalize the idea that anyone can succeed in the field.

Have you ever heard of ‘The Scully Effect’? The sci-fi series ‘The X-files’ wasn’t just entertainment for many female viewers – it was lifechanging. A survey conducted by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media found that women who regularly tuned in to The X-Files were 50% more likely to have worked in the STEM field, and close to two-thirds attributed their belief in the importance of STEM to Dana Scully, the lead character in the film.

This March, we bring you 5 our top picks of movies featuring females in STEM roles for an empowering binge-fest!

(In no particular order)

Jurassic park

Fans of this classic will vividly remember a scene early on in the movie where Dr. Ellie Sattler literally gets her hands dirty by diving into Stegosaurus poop. The gutsy doctor holds her own in this action-packed thriller of dino-proportions.

Interstellar

Interstellar is inspiration for anyone reaching for the stars. Featuring not one but two women in pivotal STEM roles, the movie shines the spotlight on Amelia Brand, a brilliant scientist who embarks on an epic journey to the ends of the universe, and Murphy Cooper, an astrophysicist who literally saves the world.

Mission Mangal

Inspiring female heroes don’t just come from Hollywood. This 2019 Bollywood blockbuster features a group of predominantly female Indian Space Research Organization scientists who juggle their personal and professional lives, and work tirelessly towards their goal of orbiting Mars. The movie showcased strong female characters who braved the odds to turn the impossible into reality.

This movie is also a favourite of our very own Nivedita Nath, whom we spoke to earlier this week!

Gravity

Dr Ryan Stone’s talents take her straight up into space in this movie – and she’s not even an astronaut. A biomedical engineer who makes amazing breakthroughs in medical imaging technology, she relies on her own intelligence and ingenuity when disaster strikes in space. This breathtaking film will have you on the edge of your seat for its entire duration.

Black Panther

The Black Panther may be the one tearing up the streets of Seoul in this blockbuster, but he wouldn’t have lasted five minutes without the tech designed by his genius sister Shuri. Coupled with a legion of elite female special forces (the Dora Milaje) warriors, this is one superhero flick that’s well worth a second watch!
